Lady Dogs Hand Lady Tigers First SEC Loss, 80-74

ATHENS, Ga. — LSU’s 12th-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team mounted a 13-point comeback on Sunday at Georgia, but it was not enough in a 80-74 loss to the 17th-ranked Lady Bulldogs in Southeastern Conference action, snapping LSU’s 15-game win streak.

LSU (16-3, 4-1 SEC) trailed 52-39 with 12:10 to play in the game before chipping away and rattling off a 14-2 run to cut the Georgia (14-5, 3-3 SEC) lead to one and later tied the score 63-63 with 4:25 left, but could never retake the lead.

The Lady Tigers began the game well, leading by as many as nine, 22-13 with 10:05 left to play in the opening half, but Georgia had a 10-0 run of their own and led 34-30 at the break.

The loss spoiled Lady Tiger head coach Sue Gunter’s 1,000 game coached in her career and she still sits at 697 career victories.

Seimone Augustus led LSU with 24 points, the sophomore’s fourth straight 20-plus point game, while Doneeka Hodges added 22 on a career night from behind the three-point arc with six treys. Wendlyn Jones collected her first career double double with a career-best 10 boards to go with 12 points in her second start of the season.

Janese Hardrick led all scorers with 25 points for Georgia, while Christi Thomas added 20.

LSU, which outrebounded the much taller Georgia team 47-36, shot just 32.0 percent from the floor, while the Lady Bulldogs hit 45.6 percent of their field goals.

The Lady Tigers will take a week off before hosting South Carolina in SEC action on Feb. 1 in the Pete Maravich Center at 2 p.m. CST.
