RUSTON, La. — LSU defensive tackle Chad Lavalais and Tulane quarterback J.P. Losman were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Players of the Week on Monday.
Lavalais earned the defensive player of the week award for the second straight week and the third LSWA player of the week honor this season.
The Marksville native pace the Tiger defense as they allowed only one offensive touchdown in a 17-14 victory at Ole Miss. The senior was also named SEC defensive player of the week as he recorded five tackles (two for losses) and two quarterback pressures as he once again paced the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense in dominant fashion. Ole Miss was held 22 points and 200 points below its season averages as LSU allowed only 27 rushing yards in the contest.
J.P. Losman threw for four touchdowns to lead Tulane University to a season-closing victory over Conference USA foe East Carolina on Saturday. The senior quarterback completed 70 percent (14-of-20) of his passes for 227 yards in the game. With the Green Wave trailing, 7-0, in the first quarter, Losman found Chris Bush for an 87-yard scoring hook-up, the second-longest pass play in school history (and the fourth-longest in C-USA history entering this season). He added a 27-yard strike in the second quarter to put the Wave on top and then a nine-yarder and a 16-yarder in the second half to put the game out of the reach of the Pirates. Losman, who has thrown a touchdown in every game this season, now has 60 career touchdown passes (third at Tulane) and 33 this season (second at Tulane).
The Louisiana Sports Writers Association player of the week awards are voted on by a panel of voters across the state. The players are nomination by the sports information directors at the football playing institutions in Louisiana.
Other offensive players nominated include: McNeese State quarterback Scott Pendarvis.
Other defensive players nominated include: McNeese State linebacker Roderick Royal and Tulane defensive back Joey Dawson.
