BATON ROUGE — LSU quarterback Matt Mauck, offensive tackle Rodney Reed and strong safety Jack Hunt have all been named to the First Team Academic District VI squad, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.
District VI is comprised of universities in the states of Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi. To be eligible for the team, players must have at least a 3.2 overall grade point average.
Mauck, a junior from Jasper, Ind., has led the Tigers to a No. 3 national ranking and an 8-1 overall mark. He currently leads the Southeastern Conference in pass efficiency with a 156.7 rating and his 19 touchdown passes rank as the second-highest total in LSU history. Mauck, a pre-dentistry major, has a 3.72 grade point average.
Reed, a First Team Academic All-America in 2002, earned a spot on the all-district team for the third straight year. Reed graduated in May with a 3.9 grade point average in accounting. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in accounting.
Reed, a West Monroe, La., native, has started 43 straight games on the offensive line for the Tigers, leading LSU to a 32-11 mark during that span. This year, Reed has seen action on 547 snaps and hasn’t allowed a sack and he’s been called for just three penalties. Reed is also one of 15 college football players in all divisions to receive the 2003 National Scholar-Athlete Award.
Hunt, a Ruston, La., native, has started eight games in the secondary for the Tigers, helping LSU’s defense allow a national-best 9.6 points a game and only 60.3 rushing yards a contest, the second-best total in the nation. Hunt ranks third on the team with 47 tackles and he’s tied for team-high honors with three interceptions, two of which have been returned for touchdowns.
Hunt carries a 3.39 grade point average in chemistry.
All three Tigers are now eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced later this month.
