RUSTON, La. — LSU quarterback Matt Mauck and McNeese State linebacker Roderick Royal were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association football players of the week on Monday.

Mauck tied a school record by completing his first 14 passes, four of them touchdowns, as he led LSU to 49 first half points in a 49-10 victory over Louisiana Tech. The junior was 18 of 20 for a career high 311 yards and four touchdowns as LSU scored the most points in a half since 1958. Mauck also set a school record with a 90% completion percentage, which also ranks second in Southeastern Conference history. He threw touchdown passes of 34, 46 and 50 yards and he moved to 13-2 as LSU’s starting quarterback.

Royal had his best game of the season as he led the top-ranked I-AA Cowboys to a 38-28 victory over Texas State. The linebacker was credited with 13 tackles (10 solos). The Baton Rouge native also had a quarterback sack for a loss of two yards, a tackle for a loss of two yards, four quarterback hurries and a pass broken up. The Cowboys held Texas State to a 6-for-29 effort passing for 77 yards in the game and to a total of 290 total yards.

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association player of the week awards are voted on by a panel of voters across the state. The players are nomination by the sports information directors at the football playing institutions in Louisiana.

Other offensive players nominated include: Grambling State quarterback Bruce Eugene, McNeese State wide receiver Britt Brodhead and Tulane running back Mewelde Moore.

Other defensive players nominated include: Grambling State cornerback Octavius Bond, LSU strong safety Jack Hunt and Tulane cornerback Sean Lucas.
