BATON ROUGE — LSU outfielder J.C. Holt has been named to the 2003 Baseball America First-Team Summer All-America team. The squad, featured in the September issue of the magazine, is comprised of the top performers from the collegiate summer leagues.
Holt, a junior from Sieper, La., was the 2003 MVP of the Cape Cod Baseball League, the wooden-bat summer league for the nation’s best college players.
Holt, who played for the Brewster Whitecaps, batted a league-high .388 (52-for-134) with six doubles, one triple, one homer, nine RBI, 25 runs and 13 steals in 33 games.
Holt was the only Southeastern Conference player named to the Summer All-America first team. SEC players voted to the second team included Vanderbilt pitchers Jeremy Sowers and Ryan Mullins, and Georgia outfielder Kyle Keen.
Holt, LSU’s starting center fielder, helped lead the 2003 Tigers to the College World Series as he batted .299 (67-for-224) with 11 doubles, two triples, five homers, 51 runs, 36 RBI and a team-high 16 steals.
Holt was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, hitting .643 (9-for-14) in three games with one double, one triple, two homers, six runs, eight RBI and one steal.
For the entire NCAA Tournament, Holt was LSU’s second-leading hitter, batting .412 (14-for-34) in eight games with one double, one triple, two homers, 10 runs, 10 RBI and two stolen bases.
Holt is one of eight returning starters in the batting order for LSU, which began its four-week fall practice session earlier this week. The Tigers open the 2004 season Feb. 13 at Central Florida.
