BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s tennis team earned a pair of dominating non-conference victories on Saturday as the Tigers cruised past both Texas-San Antonio, 6-1, and Southern, 6-0, in a late afternoon doubleheader at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
“Those were some good wins for us today against some solid teams,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “Now, we just need to keep going and continue to look for some more positive progress and move on towards the beginning of the SEC schedule. We have one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season and every win that we get is going to be a huge boost for us.”
With the pair of victories, LSU improved to 4-0 on the season and defeated Texas-San Antonio for the first time since 1991. The Tigers also earned their second win against Southern this season after knocking off the Jaguars, 7-0, on Jan. 25.
LSU’s Jason Hazley led the way for the Tigers on Saturday as the sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., picked up two, straight-set victories and notched the match-clinching points in each of the contests. With the wins, Hazley improved to an overall record of 11-7 on the season.
The Tigers’ Peter Richman, Bryan Fisher, Cory Ross and Paul White also contributed heavily for LSU by recording two singles victories in the doubleheader, while junior Brandon Nicholson blew away Southern’s Gregory Pipkins, 6-0, 6-0, to remain undefeated in dual-match play.
The LSU men’s tennis team will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 9, as the Tigers play host to both Southern Miss and Southeastern in a third-straight weekend doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
