TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The LSU swimming and diving teams fell to Florida State in a non-conference meet on Saturday at the Leach Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The LSU men lost to the Seminoles by a score of, 144-93, and the women ended up on the short end by a count of, 136-104. Junior All-American Stephanie Smith won both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle and won both 400-yard freestyle relays yet the Seminoles won 17 of 26 events in their final dual meet of the regular season.
Smith swam the 1000 free in a time of 10:01.83 and finished the 500 free in 4:53.84. LSU’s team of Bethany Cottingham, Donna Leslie, Laura Jo Leininger and Margaret Anne Moore won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.64. Neil Lowe, Martin Latz, Evan Martinec and Francisco Paez won the men’s 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:09.65.
Martinec also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.39. Sophomore Lindsay Staak won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.54. Myles Jaynes won the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:35.59. Junior Chris Stanczyk won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.86. Senior Cissy Schepens won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.23.
Saturday’s meet marked the first time this season that no LSU diver was victorious in dual-meet competition. Florida State won both the 1- and 3-meter competitions on the men’s and women’s side. Senior Kyle Van Arsdall placed second in the 3-meter with a time of 294.83.
The men fell to 3-5 on the season while the women dropped to 6-5. LSU will next face the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Delta State on Friday in Baton Rouge at 6 p.m.
