ATHENS, Ga. — All-Americans Steve Gluck and Evan Martinec will compete at the 2002 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
The championships begin on Thursday and runs through Saturday on the University of Georgia campus. Preliminaries start at 11:00 a.m. and then final are at 7 p.m. each night. Both Gluck and Martinec will compete in just one event each for the Tigers. Gluck, a senior and All-American in the 200-yard medley relay last season, will swim in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday. Gluck is ranked 17th in the nation in that event.
Martinec, a two-time All-American, will compete in his second-straight NCAA Championships. The sophomore from Tacoma, Wash., will swim in the 100-yard backstroke. Martinec is ranked 13th in the country in the event. He swam the event in a time of 47.91 in last season’s championships at College Station, Texas.
LSU finished 19th at the NCAA Championships last season, as seven men competed for LSU. Gluck and Martinec teamed with Ken Kuhn and Matthew Elder to finish 18th in the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Gluck also placed 41st in the 100-yard breastroke. Corey Fox, Kyle Van Arsdall, and Erik Petursson each competed in the diving competition for the Tigers.
Martinec and Gluck will swim on Friday only. Events on Friday include the 200-yard medley relay, 800-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, and 3-meter diving competition.
