BATON ROUGE — Five seniors from LSU’s 2001 Southeastern Conference Championship team will showcase their talents at a pair of college football all star games on Saturday.
Record-setting quarterback Rohan Davey, a Miami native, and tight end Robert Royal, from New Orleans, have been in Mobile, Ala., all week preparing for the Senior Bowl. Davey and Royal will compete for the South squad in the contest. Kickoff for the 53rd-annual Senior Bowl is set for 4 p.m. and will be televised to by ESPN.
Davey, the MVP of LSU’s 47-34 win over Illinois in the Sugar Bowl, set an LSU single-season record by throwing for 3,347 yards and 18 touchdowns in leading the Tigers to a 10-3 mark in 2001. Davey completed 31 of 53 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns in LSU’s Sugar Bowl victory.
Royal, a second team All-SEC pick this season and a member of the Playboy All-America team, caught 18 passes for 224 yards and one TD as a senior. For his career, Royal had 59 receptions for 707 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Tigers will send three players – defensive end Jarvis Green, offensive guard Dwayne Pierce, and tight end Joe Domingeaux – to participate in the Rotary Gridiron Classic in Orlando. The Rotary Gridiron Classic pits Team Florida vs. Team USA. LSU’s representatives will play for Team USA.
Kickoff for Saturday’s Rotary Gridiron Classic is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be televised live from the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando by ESPN.
Green, a native of Donaldsonville, finished his LSU career ranked fourth in school history with 20 sacks. Green, a second team All-SEC pick in 2001, had 52 tackles and four sacks as a senior.
Domingeaux, from Lafayette, and Pierce, from New Orleans, were both key components on an LSU offensive line that help the Tigers set the school-record for single-season total offense and single-season passing yards. As a unit, LSU racked up 5,418 yards of total offense, which included 3,578 passing yards in 2001.
