Swimming & Diving Completes Day 2 at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The LSU swimming and diving team continued its success on the second day of the 2001 Nike Cup Invitational on Friday at The Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.

“We had another good day here today,” said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “We have been swimming really well and this is a really tough meet.”

North Carolina is first in the men’s standings with 624 points, and The Tigers are second with 547 points. North Carolina is also first in the women’s standings

Mandy Leach won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.42. She also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.72. LSU’s team of Evan Martinec, Neil Lowe, Steve Gluck and Fransisco Paez. Paez won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.62.

Lindsay Staak won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.06. She made the B Cut of the NCAA Qualifying Standards. The B Cut was 56.50.

“North Carolina is a very good team, and I do not know if they have ever lost this meet so we want to keep doing well.”

The meet concludes on Saturday with six swimming events plus the finals of the men’s 1-meter diving. The session begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
