Women’s Golf Completes Fall Season at Lady Paladin

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The LSU Lady Tigers golf team concludes its fall season of play this weekend in the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course.

The 54-hole tournament on the 5,917-yard, par 72 school course runs through Sunday.

A total of 21 teams are in the tournament and joining LSU and host Furman are Appalachian State, defending champion Auburn, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Florida, Furman, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Ohio State, Purdue, South Carolina, TCU, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Winthrop and Wofford.

Auburn shot 877 to win the tournament a year ago and Auburn’s Celeste Troche had the best individual score of 6-under 210.

LSU will go with freshman Brooke Shelton, off her first collegiate top 10 in the Mercedes Benz in her last start, in the No. 1 position followed by senior Meredith Duncan. Isabel Dornellas and Lindy Hitdlebaugh will hold the three-four positions, while LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen was holding the last name in the lineup to see how Thursday’s practice round went for Devon Day and Erin Sarver. Both will play, but one will be No. 5 in the team lineup and the other will play in the individual competition.

“We’ve had a good fall. We’ve had some improvement over the course of the first three tournaments, but we’ve also learned a lot about staying in the round all the way to the finish,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We’ve given away a lot of strokes late in rounds and we’ve got to try to correct that. I still feel that we never do play our best in the fall, but we would like to end it on a good note against another strong field.”

LSU will have a busy spring, hosting two tournaments, its annual LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in April and the 2002 NCAA East Regional in May. Both events will be at the LSU University Club.
