Duncan Finishes Second in Amateur International

TRINITY, Texas — LSU senior golfer Meredith Duncan brings home a silver medal after a second place finish Sunday in the women’s competition of The Spirit International Amateur competition, which ended Sunday at the Whispering Pines Golf Course.

Duncan closed with a 1-under par round of 71, her second sub-par round of the event for the Shreveport native and she finished 72 holes at 3-under par 285 (72-68-74-71).

Lorena Ochoa, representing Mexico, who plays for the University of Arizona, posted a 71 on the final day and won the women’s golf medal with an 8-under 280. Joo Mi Kim of Korea got the bronze with a 2-under 286. Duncan’s United States teammate, Laura Myerscough, who also plays for Arizona, finished 72 holes at 11- over par 299.

Duncan, with three national amateur titles this past summer including the U.S. Women’s Amateur puts this finish on a resume that should get her a spot on the next Curtis Cup team for Women’s Amateurs.

In the men’s individual competition, the U.S. pair of Robert Hamilton and Casey Wittenbeg finished first and second, with Hamilton at 8-under 280 for 72 holes, despite a 1-over 73 on the final day. Wittenberg tied for second with Alberto Valenzuela of Mexico.

The USA men’s team finished tied for second with South Africa and New Zealand. The three teams were at 24-under in the men’s team event, four shots behind golf medalist winning team, Austria.

The international team and the U. S. Women’s team both finished fourth. The four player best ball team finished at 35-under par with Mexico winning with 51-under. The U.S. women finished at 16-under in fourth with Mexico the winner at 28-under par.
