Kiernan Begins Play in ITA Main Draw; Rutka Ousted

Tennis Tigers Begin Play at Tulane Classic

NEW ORLEANS — The LSU men’s tennis team will begins play in the Tulane Men’s Tennis Classic on Friday at Goldring Tennis Stadium.

The tournament features six nationally-ranked players headed up by Tulane’s 15th-ranked Michael Kogan. Dan Kiernan is the top Tiger in the draw at a ranking of No. 29.

The event opens at 9 a.m. Friday with singles matches in both the “A” Draw and the “B” Draw. A total of 35 players from six schools will compete. In addition to Tulane and LSU, UNO, UL-Lafayette, Southern and Southern Miss will have players competing.

“This is another opportunity for some of our young players to compete against some top quality competition,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown.

Kogan, the top seed in the event, will open play at 9 a.m. against LSU’s Jason Hazely. Kiernan, seeded second will battle USM’s David Jansson at noon. Jesse Smatt, ranked 72nd in the nation, squares off with UNO’s Victor Loven at noon.

Sophomore Sebastian Rutka and Bryan Fisher along with freshman Peter Richman will also be in action for the Tigers.

The doubles action will be highlighted by the No. 5 ranked duo from LSU, Sebastian Rutka and Kiernan will play at 3 p.m. against Sebastian Locatelli and Loven from UNO, while Tulane’s tandem of Kogan and Victor Romero is in action at 4:30 p.m. against Bryan Fisher and Peter Richman from LSU.
