AUBURN, Wash. — Two members of the LSU women’s golf team went out early Wednesday made three pars and joined the rest of the team to watch the end of the suspended second round from the comfort of the clubhouse as the Lady Tigers moved up three places on the leader board to a tie for sixth in the NCAA Fall Preview.
The Tiger players then got through as many as five holes in the scheduled final round Wednesday which began at 10 a.m. Pacific time before cold rain and winds moved back in, forcing a washout on the final round at 12:05 p.m. PDT and reverting the scores back to a 36-hole tournament for a second consecutive year.
LSU had moved up to a tie for fifth at the time of the cancellation, but the Lady Tigers were more than satisfied with the tie for sixth in the 24-team field.
“I thought we had a very good tournament,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “Meredith (Duncan) and Isabel (Dornellas) came out this morning and finished with pars and then we just let the rest of the field finish. We were playing good when the rains hit, but it was the right decision with the course in the condition it was in. We did what we wanted to do which was to learn about the course for next May and that’s the most important thing, but I am very happy with how we finished.”
LSU finished 302-300 – 602, 26-over-par, tied for sixth with Arizona State.
Texas and Auburn finished tied for first at 15-over par 591 with Tulsa third at 592. Ohio State took forth at 594 with Michigan State one shot ahead of LSU and Arizona State at 601.
Individually, Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan, with her par on the final hole, posted a 1-under 71 in the second round to finish at 1-over 145, good enough for a tie for fourth place. Lorena Ochoa of Arizona won the individual competition at 5-under par 139 after a second round 68. Ochoa was well on her way to dominating the field when the final round was rained out, going 3-under in the first 4 holes.
For Duncan, the United States Women’s Amateur Champion, it is her 13th career top 10 college finish, eighth best all-time at LSU.
Dornellas, after rounds of 72-75 – 147, finished at 3 over and equaled her career best finish for the third time, second straight time this fall, with a tie for 14th place.
The Lady Tigers are back in action, October 12-14, at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.
