Women’s Golf 10th in Rain-Delayed NCAA Preview

AUBURN, Wash. — The second round of the women’s NCAA Fall Preview at the Washington National Golf Club was halted Tuesday as steady afternoon rains rendered the greens unplayable late in the round.

LSU was left with two golfers on the course, Meredith Duncan, who was 1-under par with one hole to play and Isabel Dornellas who was at 3-over after 16 holes. A total of nine teams were left on the course and will finish on Wednesday morning before the schedule third round shotgun start.

Play was called at the course shortly after 6:30 p.m. Pacific time with 36 players having anywhere from one to eight holes to play.

LSU stands in a tie for 10th at 26-over par. LSU was on pace to follow Monday’s 302 with a 12-over 300. The Tigers were tied with Arizona State, who was finished at 26-over 602 for 36 holes.

Ohio State University, going for a second straight tournament win in the fall of 2001, was midway through the back nine at 5-over par, 11-over for the tournament, four shots better than Auburn, which finished 36-holes at 591, 15-over par. Tennessee, the first round leader, is tied with Tulsa at 16-over with Tennessee still on the course.

Duncan’s 1-under play so far allowed her to move up from 21st in the individual competition to a tie for eighth on the leader board at 1-over par. Duncan, playing the back nine first, was 1-under after two holes, before a double bogey on the 12th, but she birdied the par 5 14th and the par 3 16th to get to one under. She followed with all pars up to the point the round was cancelled with her on the ninth hole.

LSU’s day was helped by freshman Brooke Shelton of Plano, Texas, who rallied from Monday’s 81 to shoot a 2-over 74, including an even par last nine holes. LSU will also count an 80 from Lindy Hitdlebaugh in its final score.

“The conditions were really deteriorating rapidly,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “It was the right thing to end it early and come back out Wednesday and hope for better condition. We played a lot of the round in the rain and the girls hung tough. Again we had three players really play steady and we need Isabel and Meredith to come out Wednesday and finish it up to keep us in our present position in the top 10.”
