BATON ROUGE –LSU senior quarterback Rohan Davey completed 16 of 28 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers held their first scrimmage of fall camp here Friday in Tiger Stadium.
LSU will continue with two-a-days on Saturday with practices at 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. followed by a single 3 p.m. practice on Sunday. LSU will hold its final scrimmage next Wednesday in Tiger Stadium.
“My impression of the scrimmage is that it wasn’t as crisp and it was a little more sloppy than I would have liked to have seen it,” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “I think we have quite a bit of work to do this week to get out of this camp what we are going to need to continue to develop the kind of football team that we are capable of having. All in all I think we got some things accomplished out there today.”
“For this time of the year, I think it’s a tough time, with all the practicing we’ve done, it was tough to get the kind of execution and crispness you’d like out there in a scrimmage to get ready for the game. But there were some good things done out there. I thought the quarterbacks threw the ball pretty well and I thought we caught the ball a little bit better and more consistently than we did in the spring. We had some good runs and made some big plays, especially in the passing game.”
The Tigers spent a portion of the scrimmage working on third down situations, goal line situations and the two-minute drill. LSU also spent time working on all phases on the special teams.
Derron Parquet led all rushers for the Tigers with 61 yards on 13 carries, including one touchdown, while Devery Henderson ran for 44 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Henderson also caught three passes for 51 yards. Jerel Meyers led all receivers with five receptions for 71 yards.
Jack Hunt, Michael Clayton, Bennie Brazell and Marcus Spears each caught touchdown passes during the scrimmage.
Marcus Randall completed seven of 15 passes for 108 yards, while Matt Mauck connected on 3-of-7 passes for 80 yards and two scores. Randall and Mauck split time with the No. 2 offense. Rick Clausen was 2-of-3 for 22 yards.
“I wasn’t particularly pleased with the way we played defense,” Saban said. “I didn’t think we were sharp tackling and I thought we were a pretty good tackling team last year. We had a lot of mental mistakes in terms of what we were trying to do. It’s probably due to the fact that we had a lot of new, young players playing some positions and we gave them a big opportunity and quite a good look today so we could make a good decision on how they can contribute to our team.”
