TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Freshman Sebastian Rutka along with junior Jesse Smatt advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2000 Seminole Classic along with three of LSU’s double teams on Friday in Tallahassee’s Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
Rutka won back to back matches on the opening day, defeating Rodrigo Laub of Florida State, 6-3, 6-4, and Julian Coratella of Auburn, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, to advance and face Auburn’s Estevan Strecker in the quarters.
Smatt, the tournament’s fourth seed, beat Jacksonville’s Bram Tukker, 7-5, 6-2, before downing Florida State’s Jeff Scarella in the Round of 16, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Smatt will face Claran Moore of Bethune-Cookman in the quarterfinal on Saturday.
In doubles play, LSU’s duo of Anthony Mateljan and Brandon Nicholson won their first-round match before the second-round was postposted until Saturday. Meanwhile, the teams of Dan Kiernan and Rutka as well as Smatt and Bryan Fisher won once to advance after a first-round bye.
Nicholson and Mateljan will face Auburn’s Boz-Coratella in the second round. Kiernan-Rutka will face Valdosta State’s Olave-Borgas, and Smatt-Fisher will face Laub-Herrera of host Florida State.
The tournament continues through Sunday.
