BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will compete in their first home event of the 2000-01 season on Friday at the 12th-annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad Meet to be held in the LSU Natatorium at 3 p.m.
“It will be a different kind of meet tomorrow, because we will be competing against each other,” said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “The captains of both the Purple and Gold teamS are having fun with the event. They picked the teams yesterday based on a pre-determined lineup and there will be a great deal of competition in the meet.”
The Purple and Gold Intrasquad Meet will consist of two teams comprised of both LSU men and women swimmers and divers. The Purple team’s captains are Mandy Leach and Erik Petursson, while the captains of the Gold team are Ashley Culpepper, Lindsey Mooney, and Will Tanner.
The teams will compete in normal dual-meet fashion with both men’s and women’s 50, 100, 200, and 500-yard freestyle events, 200-yard backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke competitions, relay events, and both the one and three-meter diving competitions.
“I’m going to look at the times and scores from tomorrow’s meet as well as next week’s meet against Houston and Wright State to decide who is going to travel with the team this season,” Cavana said. “Right now there are about two or three traveling spots to be won on both the men’s and women’s teams.”
The teams will keep score in the meet, and points will be awarded to the top-three finishers from each team in every event.
The Purple team took the all-time series lead last year with a 227-199 win over the Gold team. The Purple team was victorious in 1999, 1997, 1996, 1993, and 1989, while the Gold team finished on top in 1995, 1994, 1992, and 1990. The teams ended with the score tied in both 1998 and 1991.
The 12th-annual Purple and Gold Meet will begin Friday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m. in the LSU Natatorium. Warm-ups are scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m.
