Swim Teams Remain Undefeated

LSU SWIMMING TEAMS REMAIN UNDEFEATED

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – – The LSU swimming teams both maintained their perfect records Monday afternoon as they cruised to victories over Colorado College and Washington State University.

The Lady Tigers improved their record to 5-0, 2-0 with a 53-39 win over the 36th-ranked Washington State squad, while the men overwhelmed Colorado College 102-39.

“I’m extremely proud of the way that we performed today,” said head coach Rick Meador. “We got the new millennium off to a good start by getting two big wins, and we swam very well despite some key injuries. The layoff was good for us in that it allowed us to get some quality workouts in, and we benefited from that today.”

LSU set a total of 15 pool records in the competition, with the Lady Tigers picking up seven and the men setting eight. LSU was victorious in every event but one on the day, and swept six of the 15 races.

Lady Tiger sophomore Mandy Leach finished first in two events during the competition. She won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.93, and the 100 freestyle in 52.34 seconds.

Leach also helped guide the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to victory along with junior Ashley Marxen, and freshmen Suzie Flook and Julie Hughes.

On the men’s side of the competition, LSU captain Ken Kuhn buzzed his way through the opposition to pick up two first-place finishes as well. He was victorious in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 20.66 and 46.22 seconds.

“Ken and Mandy both did an excellent job of swimming today,” said Meador. “I feared that some of our kids would be a little rusty after the break, but they looked to be in top-notch form out there.”

The men’s swimming team improved its record to 3-0, 1-0 on the season, while the Lady Tigers upped their record to 5-0, 1-0. The Tigers will next be in action Saturday, January 8 at 1 p.m. as they host the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the LSU Natatorium.
