CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – LSU’s men’s and women’s teams wound up a successful weekend of swimming and diving in finishing second to the home-standing Tarheels on both sides of the 14th annual Nike Cup Championships at the Maurice J., Koury Natatorium. The field consisted of 11 teams.
The 18th-ranked Tar Heel women swept to the title of the women’s meet by scoring 1261 points with LSU in second place with 713 points. On the men’s side, the 23rd-ranked Tar Heel men’s team won the Nike Cup title with 1072 points. LSU and Texas A&M fought a close battle for second place with the Tigers ending up with 735.5 points and the Aggies scoring 713.5. points.
LSU’s women’s squad was anchored by Melissa Knox’s victory in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:45.67, an NCAA B-standard qualifying time), Mandy Leach’s win in the 100-yard freestyle final (50.46, also an NCAA qualifying time) and a second-place finish by the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:28.58).
On the men’s side, LSU was led by Corey Fox’s third-place finish in the 3-meter diving competition (526.55), Mattias Ohlin’s victory in the 200-yard backstroke (1:47.03, an NCAA B-Standard qualifying time) and Ken Kuhn’s second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (44.84, an NCAA Qualifying time).
LSU returns to action on Dec. 18 as it plays host to the Cajun Diving Championships.
