Ricky Vaughn enters his third season with the LSU track and field program. His primary responsibility is working with the throwers. Last season he helped Blake Theriot become the Tigers’ first All-American in the javelin since 1991. He also helped Theriot become the Tigers’ first SEC champion in the javelin in nearly a decade.
Knowledgable in all disciplines of throwing, Vaughn had four of his throwers qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in three different events — javelin, hammer, shot put.
Vaughn came to LSU after a successful four-year stint with the University of Texas-El Paso. During his time at UTEP, Vaughn coached throws and jumps and directed 10 Western Athletic Conference Champions, 10 All-Americans, one National Champion, one Olympian and two national record-holders.
A well-respected recruiter, Vaughn was responsible for signing 21 All-Americans during his time at UTEP.
Prior to his tenure in El Paso, Vaughn served as field event and strength coach at Ashland University in Ohio. During his five years at Ashland, he coached 18 All-Americans and five National Champions.
Vaughn is a former three-time All-American at NCAA Division II Angelo State in Texas- twice in the hammer, once in the discus. He was nationally ranked in the hammer throw by Track and Field News every year between 1989-94.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Angelo State in 1989, with a minor in Biology. Vaughn went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Ashland University in 1991.
Vaughn is married to the former Mary Rose of North Canton, Ohio. The two have a son, Reid (4).
