Tigers Drop Game to Oklahoma

NORMAN, OKLA. – The No. 25 LSU women’s basketball team dropped its first contest since November 9, on the road against Oklahoma, 90-68. With the win, the Sooners improve to 5-4 and the Tigers fall to 8-2 with the loss. The game was a part of the 2019 Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Khayla Pointer and Ayana Mitchell led the way for the Tigers. Pointer dropped 24 points, notched three assists, and grabbed two rebounds. Mitchell shot 100 percent from the field for the second game in a row to finish with 20 points.

HOW IT HAPPNENED

  • Pointer got the scoring started right off the tip with a jump shot and LSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
  • Oklahoma cut the LSU lead to just 1, before Pointer hit another jumper to extend it back to a three-point lead.
  • Oklahoma took their first lead, 17-16, of the game behind a three from Taylor Robertson at 2:19 in the first quarter.
  • Oklahoma closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 23-16 heading into the second.
  • Pointer led all scorers in the first with eight points.
  • Jaelyn Richard-Harris made it a one possession game at the 6:02 mark in the second with a jumper off of a fast break.
  • The Sooners outscored the Tigers 28-16 in the second quarter to take a 51-32 lead into the halftime break.
  • Pointer led all scorers by a wide margin in the first half with 17 points on 7-12 shooting.
  • At the 8:41 mark in the third quarter, Mitchell grabbed her 800th career rebound, leading to a put back layup to cut into the Sooner lead.
  • Oklahoma continued to keep the Tigers at bay at the third quarter media timeout, leading 64-43.
  • Both teams shot over 46 percent from the field in the third, but the Sooners took a 71-49 lead into the final quarter.
  • Both teams matched buckets, 10-10, heading into the fourth quarter media timeout but the Sooners held an 81-59 lead.
  • Both teams scored 19 in the fourth, but the Tigers could not complete the comeback – losing 90-68.
  • Pointer led all scorers, and was two points away from tying her career high, with 24 points.
  • Mitchell finished with 20 points on 10-10 shooting. Mitchell has made her last 21 shot attempts from the field dating back to the Memphis game in the Bahamas.

The Tigers take a break for final exams before returning to action on December 19. LSU will take on Florida Gulf Coast on the road at 6:00 p.m. CT.
