BATON ROUGE – Freshman Nina Geissler and Sophomore Anna Loughlan claimed their respective singles flight titles at the 2019 Tiger Fall Classic on Friday, November 8, at the LSU Tennis Complex.
Doubles Results
Junior Eden Richardson and Geissler teamed together to take on Oleksandra Korashvili and Jasmine Asghar. The teams contested an even match, with neither teams able to break away from their opponent. Korashvili and Asghar were able to eventually win consecutive games and take the match 7-5.
Junior Luba Vasilyuk and freshman Safiya Carrington took on Camila Romero and Ivana Corley in their doubles match. Vasilyuk and Carrington took an early 2-0 lead before Romero and Corley equalized. The two duos traded games back and forth before the Sooners were able to pull ahead and win the match 7-5.
Singles Results
Geissler faced off against Grace Joyce at the No. 3 singles. Geissler got off to a great start and was able to coast through the first set 6-2. The second set was similar to the first, with Geissler in control most of it and winning 6-1 to take the straight set victory and clinch the Flight B singles title.
Vasilyuk took on Clare McKee at the No. 5 singles. McKee dominated the first set, only dropping one game on her way to a 6-1 win. The second set was the same story, with McKee winning 6-1 to take the match.
No. 11-ranked Richardson was matched against Daria Frayman at the No. 2 singles. Frayman took an early lead and was able to hold off a late charge from Richardson to take the first set 6-4. Frayman took the lead in the second set and held on to win 6-3 and win the match.
Carrington faced Brianna Shvets at the No. 1 singles. An even first set saw Carrington take the early lead and hold off a charge from Shvets to win 6-4. The second set was as narrow as the first, but with Shvets able to hold Carrington off this time and win 6-4 to force the decisive third set. Carrington and Shvets traded games back and forth before Carrington was able to take the set 6-4 and win the match.
Loughlan’s match up saw her take on Stephanie Schrage at the No. 4 singles. Schrage and Loughlan’s first set was narrow, with Loughlan recovering from a slow start to extend the set at 5-5. Schrage was then able to win consecutive matches and take the first set 7-5. Loughlan replied in the second set with a strong showing, winning 6-4 and forcing a third set. Loughlan was emphatic in the third set and rode momentum to a 6-3 set victory and clinch the singles title for Flight C.
ITA National Fall Championships
The second round of the consolation singles draw saw junior Taylor Bridges take on NAU’s Chiara Tomasetti. Bridges took an early lead in the first set and didn’t lose ground on her way to winning 6-3. The second set saw Bridges only lose seven points and win 6-0 to advance rounds.
Bridges faced St. Mary’s Mariia Kozyreva in the consolation quarterfinals. Kozyreva took the lead and was able to hold off a charge from Bridges as she took the first set 6-3. Kozyreva carried momentum from the first set to blank Bridges 6-0 and advance to the consolation semifinals.
