SAN JOSE Del CABO, Mexico – The No. 19 LSU women’s golf team is on pace to earn its fourth Top 3 tournament finish as the Tigers are currently in second place after the Second Round of the Battle at the Beach in San José Del Cabo, Mexico.
The Tigers shot an even 288 to stay at 5-over 581 in second place going into Monday’s final round. It was LSU’s fifth round this season of par or under. LSU is just one stroke out of first place behind Ole Miss at 4-over.
“We backed up a good first round with a little bit better round today,” said second-year head coach Garrett Runion. “That’s who we are right now, playing a little better each day of a tournament. Ole Miss played very well today and closed the gap to put two SEC teams fighting for the title.”
Rookie Latanna Stone jumped 12 spots into a tie for second place with a 5-under 67, the lowest round of her first collegiate season and matches the team low this season. She started on Hole 2, posting an eagle on 3 and a birdie on 4 to start the round at 3-under. Stone picked up two more birdies at 13 and 16 before her first bogey on 17. She wrapped up her round with a birdie on 1.
“Latanna played a great round of golf and has put herself in position to win the individual title tomorrow,” continued Runion. “I’m really proud of Kendall posting a round of even par today after struggling in the first round. Presley played solid as well.
“The good news is that every one of our players felt like they could have played better. Felt like they left some shots out there. We’re excited to go out tomorrow and end the Fall season on a high note.”
Junior Kendall Griffin posted the second-lowest LSU score of the day at even par. She shot par on 14 holes, two birdies and two bogeys. Sophomore Presley Baggett finished the round at 1-over 73 with 13 holes of par, two birdies and three bogeys. Freshman Ingrid Lindblad contributed the fourth team score of the round with a 4-over, dropping her from first to eighth place.
LSU finished the day with the second-most pars of the round with 60. For the tournament, the Tigers are fourth in pars with 107 and first in eagles with three. LSU is first in Par 5s with a 4.86 average.
The final round will begin on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. CT from holes 1-5, paired with Ole Miss, Virginia Tech and host TCU.
