Basketball Tigers Host Nicholls Saturday at 3 p.m.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Tigers look to rebound after a two-point road defeat when it hosts Nicholls Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. 

The game is set to be streamed on SECN+ with Lyn Rollins and Victor Howell on the call while Patrick Wright and former coach John Brady will call the game on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (100.7 FM The Tiger in Baton Rouge, lsusports.net/live, Sirius XM, and TuneIn).

Tickets are available at LSUTix.net and beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the upper ticket windows of the Maravich Center. 

LSU students are admitted free of charge with a valid ID. Also it is Kids Day and youth tickets (ages 3-12) are available for $1 with the first 1,000 kids under 12 receiving a mini-plush Tiger. Also shortly after the game, all kids under 12 will be invited to the court to shoot free-throws.

The Tigers are 1-1 after falling to VCU in Richmond on Wednesday night, 84-82. The Tigers fell behind by 15 points late  in the first half, trailed by 12 at halftime (50-38) before coming back to tie the game at 67-67 and taking an 82-81 lead with less than two minutes to play. But VCU was able to get points at the free throw line and the Tigers were unable to make a shot down the stretch to allow the Rams to get the win. 

LSU has had a turnover issues in the first two games, committing 16 in the opening win over Bowling Green and 26 in the loss to VCU. Wednesday night, that results in a total of 37 points off turnovers, some 44 percent of VCU’s points in the contest.

For the second straight game this season, five players were in double figures against VCU led by senior Skylar Mays with 23 points. Mays also had a game-high eight rebounds. Javonte Smart had 15, Trendon Watford 11 and Darius Days and Charles Manning Jr. each scored 10. 

The Tigers shot 51.7 percent from the floor with seven treys in the game and out rebounded VCU, 39-31. 

Nicholls comes in at 2-1 after an 81-66 win over Paul Quinn on Wednesday night in Thibodaux, but the Colonels had a good opening week on the road, losing to Illinois in overtime (78-70) and won 75-70 at Pittsburgh last Saturday. In that game, Nicholls jumped out to a 41-31 advantage and shot 16-of-32 from the floor with seven treys. 

Hunter D’Angelo and Andre Jones led the Colonels with 17 points each. In the Paul Quinn game, it was Dexter McClanahan who led the scoring with 18 with Elvis Harvey Jr. getting 17 and Hunter 16. Harvey had 10 rebounds as well.

This will be the first time the teams have met since early in the 2011-12 season and this will be the 18th meeting between the two schools since 1987 with LSU leading, 17-1.

Nicholls is the last Louisiana school to be the Tigers at home, that coming on Nov. 16, 2010. LSU has won 18 straight games against state schools since that time. 

This is the first of two consecutive home games both with teams that will be joining LSU for the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic (Nov. 22, 24). The Tigers will host Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday night prior to leaving for the event on Wednesday. Nicholls and UMBC will play in a separate bracket at the Classic with NC A&T and Eastern Michigan. 

Game time on Tuesday for the Tigers and UMBC is 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on the SEC Network and broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network. Tickets will be available Monday and Tuesday during the day at the LSU Athletics Ticket Office and always at LSUTix.net.
