Thompson Earns SEC Offensive Player of the Week Honors

Baton Rouge, La. Molly Thompson was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Friday afternoon by the league offices for her two goal, one assist performance that helped the LSU soccer team defeat Kentucky on Thursday night.

Thompson played a part in each of LSU’s three goals on the evening that resulted in a 3-2 victory. All in all, she scored two goals and tallied an assist for a total of five points in the match. She got the night started by setting up Meghan Johnson’s goal in the fifth minute of the contest.

In the 23rd minute, Thompson doubled LSU’s lead with her first goal of her sophomore campaign. The native of Houma, La., was the beneficiary of great chance created by freshman Rammie Noel. Noel setup Thompson with a chip shot that just had to clear the keeper from inside the six for the score.

It was in the 84th minute that Thompson sealed the deal with a calculated play. Emma Grace Goldman (drop kick) and Lindsey Eaton (head touch) got Thompson in behind Kentucky’s backline. Thompson had a defender on her hip and shielded her from the ball, and then she proceeded to nutmeg the charging Kentucky keeper for the gamewinner.

It was a career night for Thompson who registered multiple goals in a game for the first time in her LSU career. She closed the 2019 campaign with two goals and two assists for a total of six points. It is her first-career SEC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
