LSU Graduation Success Rate Near All-Time High

BATON ROUGE – The success of LSU student-athletes in the classroom continues to remain near historic levels as the university scored an 89 in the most recent Graduation Success Rate released by the NCAA.

It’s the second straight year LSU student-athletes posted a score of 89 percent in the GSR, which is one point shy of the school’s all-time high of 90 set in 2017.

“Our student-athletes consistently meet and exceed the highest standards of performance, on and off the field,” LSU Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said. “I could not be more proud of how they represent this great university with their work ethic, character and commitment to excellence in their academic and athletic pursuits.”

LSU’s overall score of 89 tied with Auburn and Missouri as the fourth-highest total among all Southeastern Conference institutions and third-best among public institutions in the league. Vanderbilt, a private university, led the way in the SEC with a score of 97.

Six sports led LSU with perfect score of 100 – men’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, softball, women’s golf, women’s tennis and volleyball.

In addition to LSU’s six perfect scores, the school produced scores of 90 or better in five other sports – women’s swimming and diving (96), women’s soccer (95), gymnastics (93), women’s basketball (92) and women’s track and field (90). All of LSU’s women’s sports teams scored at least 90 percent in this year’s GSR.

The LSU men’s basketball team recorded its second-highest total ever with a score of 86. Last year, the LSU men’s basketball team set its all-time high with a score of 89. LSU’s No. 1 ranked football team scored a 71.

Rounding out the men’s scores include an 87 for the baseball team, 86 for golf, and 85 for track and field.

“The success garnered by our student-athletes is the direct result of the collective impact of all,” LSU Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Executive Director of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes Kenneth Miles said. “The culture, expectation, involvement, and inclusiveness help the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes achieve success. Academic affairs, the Tiger Athletics Foundation, and athletics administration are essential to achieving 89 percent graduation success rate. We are certainly proud of the accomplishments of our scholar–athletes. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.”

In 2018-19, LSU had a school-record 123 student-athletes graduate from the university, topping the previous mark of 114 set during the 2010-11 academic year. Most recently, LSU recognized 221 of its student-athletes for posting a 3.0 grade point average or better during the 2019 spring semester.

These scores, along with the record number of student-athlete graduates in 2018-19, again provide proof that LSU is putting its student-athletes on the right track for success after their college careers have been completed.

The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshmen class of 1995.
