Corley, Bridges Advance to Regional Quarterfinals

BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s tennis senior Paris Corley and junior Taylor Bridges advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles and singles bracket of the ITA Women’s Southern Regionals on Saturday, October 19, at the LSU Tennis Complex.

Day 2 Doubles

Junior Eden Richardson and freshman Nina Geissler faced UAB’s Marlene Hermann and Jana Hecking in the first round of the doubles main draw. The two Tigers were dominant in the match, taking the lead and never losing it on their way to an 8-2 victory.

Junior Luba Vasilyuk and sophomore Anna Loughlan drew Northwestern State’s Ema Dancetovic and Ela Iwaniuk in their first round matchup. The two teams were even in the early stages, but Loughlan and Vasilyuk pulled away and didn’t look back on their way to an 8-4 win.

Bridges and Corley took on UAB’s Dominika Hrabalova and Adela Wasservauerova. The Purple and Gold showed their strength, dominating the match and winning 8-3 to advance to the second round.

Day 2 Singles

Bridges drew Jacksonville State’s Cristina Moll Alles in the first round of singles play. Bridges began the match strongly, winning the first set 6-1. The second set was a similar story, with Bridges dominating and winning 6-2 to advance to the next round.

No. 11-ranked Richardson faced Lahari Yelamanchili from Tulane in her first round match. Yelamanchili and Richardson contested a close first set that required a tiebreaker to decide it. Yelamanchili was able to pull ahead and win the tiebreaker by a score of 7-4 to take the first set. Richardson replied with a strong 6-1 win in the second set to force a decisive third set. Yelamanchili held off Richardson, winning the third set 6-1 to advance.

Vasilyuk was matched against Ole Miss’ Isolde de Jong. The two had an even first set, requiring a tiebreaker that de Jong was able to win by a score of 7-4. De Jong rode momentum from winning the first set to take the second by a score of 6-2 to move to the next round.

Corley took on UAB’s Hecking in her first round matchup. Corley was dominant in the first set, coasting to a 6-1 win. The second set was a sweep, with Corley winning 6-0 and moving on to the second round.

Geissler drew Mississippi State’s Marta Falceto. Geissler got off to a great start, winning the first set, 6-1. Falceto equalized, winning a narrow second set by a score of 7-5. The decisive third set saw Falceto able to pull ahead and win by a score of 6-3 to advance rounds.

The final first round matchup for LSU saw Loughlan face Samford’s Rouxanne Van Rensburg. Van Rensburg and Loughlan traded games back and forth, requiring a tiebreaker that Van Rensburg was able to win and take a match lead. Van Rensburg did not slow down in the second set, winning it 6-3 to move on.

Day 3 Doubles

Richardson and Geissler’s second round matchup was against Samford’s Van Rensburg and Elsa Pool. Similar to their first round match, Richardson and Geissler were dominant, winning the match 8-3 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

Loughlan and Vasilyuk were matched against Mississippi State’s Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk in their second round matchup. The teams contested an even contest, trading games and the lead itself. The Bulldogs were able to take the lead late and win successive games to take the match by a score of 8-6.

Bridges and Corley took on Northwestern State’s Dora Szczgielska and Judit Castillo. The Tigers were ruthless, dominating the match and winning 8-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Day 3 Singles

Corley’s second round matchup saw her take on Samford’s Pool. Corley was ruthless, sweeping Pool in the first set, 6-0. Corley did not let up in the second set, winning 6-1 to earn a spot in the Round of 16.

Bridges was matched against Tulane’s Mackenzie Clark in her second round match. Bridges had a strong start, winning the first set convincingly, 6-2. Clark struck back in the second set, narrowly winning 6-4 to force a third set. Bridges and Clark contested a narrow third set, with Bridges able to pull ahead and win the third set 6-4 to advance to the next round.

Corley drew SEC foe Alba Cortina Pou from Alabama for her Round of 16 match. Corley took an early first set lead and rode it to a 6-3 win. The second set was a similar story, with Corley able to hold off Cortina Pou’s late charge to win the set 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals.

Bridges’ matchup saw her take on Auburn’s Madeline Meredith. Meredith won the first two games, taking an early 2-0 before Bridges won the following six games to win the first set by a score of 6-2. Bridges held strong in the second set, controlling it and winning 6-2 again to earn a spot in the last eight.
