BATON ROUGE — Junior Ryan Fontenot and sophomore Anna Lyons have been honored for their outstanding achievements in the classroom during the past academic year by being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Team on Thursday.
Fontenot ? a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll ? has earned distinction as a first-team selection on the men’s track and field/cross country academic all-district team as he boasts a collective 3.93 grade-point average in biological sciences.
The Baton Rouge native has proven to be one of the Tigers’ top sprint hurdlers this season as he earned his first career trip to Sacramento, Calif., to compete in this week’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with an impressive performance at the regional meet two weeks ago.
Fontenot, who clocked a personal best time of 13.87 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 26, advanced to the national semifinal of the event Wednesday before seeing his outstanding season come to an end with an 18th-place finish. His personal best time ranks No. 10 on the school’s all-time list.
Lyons has also been honored by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America as a second-team selection on the women’s track and field/cross country academic all-district team as she sports a perfect 4.0 GPA in human movement.
The Ruston, La., native has enjoyed a banner year as one of the Lady Tigers’ top throwers as she participated in the javelin at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships in Columbia, Mo., two weeks ago. She also scored four points with fifth place finish in the event in helping the team to its first outdoor conference title at the SEC Outdoor Championships on May 13.
