BATON ROUGE — A pair of LSU distance runners have been honored by the Southeastern Conference for their outstanding community service efforts this season as junior Katie Dawson and freshman Brett Borne were named to the SEC Good Works Team on Monday.
The duo has helped spearhead the efforts of the LSU track and field team with the school’s Shaquille O’Neal CHAMPS/Life Skills Program that seeks to give student-athletes the chance to give back to the Baton Rouge community.
Dawson ? a native of Baton Rouge ? participated in a number of community service projects during the past academic year, including the recent Read Across America event at University Lab School where she read Dr. Seuss books to elementary students.
She has played a major role in the success of the school’s annual Halloween BOOzar and Christmas Toy Drive, while also visiting the Children’s Ward at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where she visited the kids and read books to children in the Earl K. Long Hospital waiting room.
Borne ? a native of Covington, La. ? was also an active participant in the Read Across America event at University Lab School along with Dawson, while he also participated in the Halloween BOOzar last fall where he helped pass out candy and sign autographs for local children.
In addition, both Dawson and Borne took time out of their busy academic and athlete schedules to serve as volunteers at this year’s Special Olympics on campus as they assisted with basketball games held at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
