Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 1 this week in the five polls that were released Monday morning, marking the seventh week this season the Tigers are No. 1 in at least one poll … LSU was 3-1 in its games last week, including an SEC series victory over second-ranked Texas A&M in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … LSU has won 14 of its last 16 games and seven of its last eight … the Tigers batted .330 in the Texas A&M series and collected 35 hits in three games against the Aggie pitching staff, which has the best team ERA in the SEC … the Tigers defeated the Aggies, 4-3, on Thursday night when designated hitter Danny Zardon delivered a run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth inning for LSU’s first walk-off win of the year … the win was LSU’s first walk-off victory since April 25, 2014, when Mark Laird’s single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Tigers to an 8-7 triumph over Tennessee … in Game 2 against the Aggies on Friday night, the Tigers overcame a 5-2 seventh-inning deficit by erupting for seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined en route to a 9-6 victory … five Tigers hit .400 or better the in the series – DH Chris Sciambra (.417, 2 RBI, 2 runs), leftfielder Jake Fraley (.417, 1 triple, 2 RBI, 3 runs), shortstop Alex Bregman (.417, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run), first baseman Chris Chinea (.417, 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and third baseman Conner Hale (.400, 1 RBI, 1 run) … for the entire week, including a 6-0 win over Tulane on Tuesday night, Hale, who is riding an eight-game hitting streak, batted .500 (7-for-14) with one double, four RBI and one run … Chinea hit .467 (7-for-15) for the week with one double, one homer, three RBI and three runs … Bregman extended his current reached-base streak to 41 straight games, and he has the Tigers’ longest current hitting streak at nine games … sophomore left-hander Jared Poche’ turned in an excellent outing on Thursday night against Texas A&M, limiting the Aggies to just one earned run on six hits in seven innings with no walks and one strikeout … sophomore right-hander Hunter Newman has a save in each of his last three appearances, including his two-inning outing Friday night against Texas A&M … Newman allowed one run – the first earned run he’s allowed all season – with no walks and one strikeout … on the year, Newman is 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA and three saves – in 23.2 innings, he has allowed one earned run on 15 hits with four walks, 22 strikeouts and a .181 opponent batting average.
