CCACSA Announces Student-Athletes of the Month

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for January.

Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU’s Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

January’s student-athletes of the month are Jevonte Domond [Football], Emily Griggs [Softball], Britney Ranzy [Gymnastics], Collin Strall [Baseball] and Kate Zimmer [Swimming and Diving]. John Odo [Men’s Basketball] was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.

Domond and Odo are interdisciplinary studies majors, Ranzy and Strall are sport administration majors, Griggs is a civil engineering major and Strall is a nutrition and food sciences major.

Odo, a senior from Lagos, Nigeria, appeared in 28 games at forward for the Tigers in 2014. Odo went with the basketball team to visit Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital for a holiday visit where they sang carols and handed out basketballs to cheer up the patients. He also volunteered for over 30 hours in the local community over the fall semester.

A sophomore offensive tackle from Glendale Arizona, Domond spent the 2014 season as a redshirt for the Tigers after transferring from an Arizona junior college. The former four-star recruit is looking forward to making an impact on the field for LSU in 2015.

Griggs, a freshman outfielder from Wichita, Kansas, comes to the LSU softball team after an illustrious high school career that saw her win four consecutive championships and earn four varsity letters while being named a high school All-American.

A senior gymnast from Chesapeake, Virgina, Ranzy competed on bars in all 15 team meets in 2014 and never scored lower than a 9.825 on vault in 2014. The former U.S. National Team member will continue to push for a spot in the all-around in her senior season.

Strall, a sophomore pitcher from Suwanee, Georgia, will play his first season for the Tigers in 2015 after transferring from Tallahassee Community College. Strall posted a 7-2 record and a 2.54 ERA in 2014 at Tallahassee.

A freshman swimmer from Missoula, Montana, Zimmer was named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American prior to enrolling at LSU. The swimming & diving team is excited to add the former state champion to the program.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.

The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square foot facility comprised of an academic affairs, student affairs and an information technology team, serving more than 530 student-athletes.
