No. 4 Beach Splits Weekend in Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, Fla. After splitting day one at the FAU Beach Burrow Bash, the No. 4 LSU Beach Volleyball team did the same thing on Saturday, falling to No. 10 South Carolina in the morning, 3-2, but rebounding to defeat UAB, 4-1, to close out the weekend.


The Tigers opened up Saturday play bright and early against South Carolina, but were unable to get the job done. Graduate transfer Taryn Kloth and senior Megan Davenport, playing together for the first time, took the first set on Court 4, 21-18. The LSU duo was unable to finish the deal though dropping the next two sets, 21-18 and 15-8.


Freshman Allison Coens and sophomore Hunter Domanski took the second set, 21-15, after dropping the first set, 22-20, to force a deciding set o Court 5. The LSU pair came up victorious in the third, 15-11, as the Tigers and Gamecocks split Courts 4 and 5.


On Court 2, junior Olivia Powers and freshman Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope fell in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-19. Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss remained undefeated on Court 1, earning another straight-set victory, 21-17 and 21-18.


Senior Toni Rodrgiuez and freshman Kelli Agnew battled to take the second set, 21-17, after they dropped the first set by the same score. In the deciding set, Rodriguez and Agnew fell, 15-13, as South Carolina picked up just its second victory over LSU all-time.


In the final match of the weekend, the Tigers tried out a couple new pairs. Toni Rodriguez and junior Maddie Ligon paired up on Court 4 for the first time this season and came away with a two-set, 21-9 and 21-13, sweep.


Coens and Domanski, a mainstay on Court 5 for the Tigers through the season thus far, fell in set one, 21-19, but rebounded nicely to win the next two sets, 21-10 and 15-7, to give the Tigers a two-court advantage.


Coppola and Nuss, now 8-0 on the year, made quick work on Court 1 with their seventh consecutive straight-set win, 21-17 and 21-4, clinching the match for LSU.


The other new pair was Taryn Kloth and Kelli Agnew on Court 3. Kloth and Agnew dropped the first set, 21-16, but came back to win set-two, 21-17. In the deciding set, the LSU pair won, 15-8.


Powers and Rasnick-Pope would go to a deciding set as well. The LSU duo fell in the first set, 21-14, but responded with a 21-16 second set victory. In the final set of the day, Powers and Rasnick-Pope would fall, 15-11, but the Tigers got the 4-1 win over UAB.
