Spirit Squad Tryout Process

Tryouts consist of 3 Phases:

PHASE 1:
3 Day in person tryout will consist of technique combo passes across the floor, short jazz dance, short Hip Hop dance, Game Day dance(Game day dance is taught via video and to be learned the week of tryouts, it will be posted the week before on Social Media. There will be cuts throughout the tryout weekend until approximately 20-25 dancers are chosen. We use a progressive tryout format therefore everyone must be present to audition. Please see details below about the itinerary.

PHASE 2:
For participants that make it from Phase 1 to Phase 2, there will be a 2 day evaluation with a cut if needed followed by 2-3 days of practice and Camp in July.

PHASE 3:
For participants that make it from Phase 2 to Phase 3, there will be a week-long practice the week prior to the start of school. If additional cuts are warranted they will be made during this phase.

*Cuts during the 2 & 3 phases will be based on the person’s ability to maintain their performance level from Phase 1 & 2, as well as, final decisions on the person’s ability to work with their peers and coaches.

How can I prepare for LSU Tiger Girl tryouts?

We are looking for a well-rounded individual. First and foremost an outgoing personality as well as good character is very important. The LSU Tiger Girls are highly visible within our community and therefore must be able to represent the University in a positive way. Grades and how well you work with others and our coaches will also be considered at tryouts. We are looking for well-rounded jazz, pom and hip hop dancers.

Dance
Dance training in all disciplines is helpful. Jazz. Pom and Hip Hop are the styles we perform and weigh heavily at auditions.

Tumbling
A foundation of tumbling is required for auditions. Individual tumbling will be evaluated during auditions. Dancers will be expected to grow their tumbling knowledge if they make the team. While there are not required tumbling skills, we do evaluate tumbling ability.

Clinics
Attending one of our spring one day clinics is helpful, as you will gain a perspective on our tryout process. It is also a good idea to attend one of our games to see our Tiger Girls in action. All portions of tryouts are closed to the public. Evaluators will consist of the coach, alumni Tiger Girl and Spirit Directory. The purpose of the tryout is to choose the best all-around representatives for LSU.

General Information
We are looking for committed team members who exemplify athleticism through their skill level, fitness, health, and work ethic. Our team is continuously in the public eye and is expected to represent LSU by maintaining an athletic/professional image.

About the Team
Commitment to a full year of participation is mandatory. We start in April with tryouts, returners dance at baseball games through May, we meet in July to prepare for the upcoming season, and we start formal practices a week prior to the start of school in August. We dance at Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, occasional gymnastics meets and volleyball matches and Baseball games. In addition, we participate in additional athletic department events, campus and community service activities during the year. Participation in UDA College Nationals will be determined on a yearly basis. There is not have a weight or height restriction.
