BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes (CCACSA) has achieved College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) stage two certification for all three levels of the department’s tutor training by the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) committee.
The ITTPC committee is a vital part of the CRLA and is recognized as a leader in the field of tutor training by the six professional organizations that make up the Council on Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA).
“As our tutorial coordinator, the stage two recertification process has allowed me to reflect on the strengths and areas of improvement of our training program,” said Lydia Dorsey, the tutorial coordinator and learning specialist for CCACSA. “By reevaluating all three levels of our training, through the lens of CRLA recertification, I was able identify ways to enhance our tutors’ knowledge base and skills through our hybrid in-person and online training program.
“I believe our training at stage two will continue to provide both our new and veteran tutors with the professional development they need to make our program even more of a success. If we are able to provide our tutors with a training program that seeks to cultivate their talents as educators, they are better equipped and able to help our student-athletes thrive academically.
The ITTPC establishes benchmarks for effective tutor training based upon research and best practices including tutor selection, the content and sequencing of training topics, tutoring experience and tutor evaluation. The ITTPC certifies programs, which in turn certify their tutors who meet or exceed the guidelines of the ITTPC.
