NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU men’s tennis team secured three singles victories in Day 1 of the Commodore Scramble Friday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center on Vanderbilt’s campus.
The Tigers continue in Day 2 of the Commodore Scramble Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CT with all four players competing in the second round of singles play and one pair competing in doubles after a first round setback.
Brandi’s Corner
“It was a solid first day for us,” co-head coach Chris Brandi said. “It is always an adjustment getting used to the different courts and environments, and our guys did a nice job of adjusting today, especially in singles. We are still learning how to play and trying out some new partners in doubles, but overall, we are pleased with the focus and effort today. We look forward to taking some momentum into tomorrow after finishing the afternoon on a high note.
Doubles Play
To start off the day, Rafael Wagner and Nikola Samardzic defeated Vanderbilt/Louisville pair, Adam Sraberg and Fredrik Moe, 6-1. The duo advanced to the second round and fell, 7-5, to George Hedley and Federico Gomez of Louisville.
In his first doubles match as a Tiger, Stewart Block teamed with Gabor Csonka to face George Harwell and Maxwell Freeman of Vanderbilt, and the duo suffered a 6-1 loss in the first round. In round two of doubles, Block and Stewart lost a hard-fought, 6-4, battle against Lipscomb’s Alejandro Manzanares and Jorge Ortegon.
Singles Action
The Tigers rebounded in singles play when three of the four players secured victories to advance to the second round.
In Draw A, Csonka took a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 win against Auburn’s Edward Nguyen, and Wagner defeated Auburn’s Carles Sarrio in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
With consecutive 6-3 sets against Furman’s Drew Singerman, Samardzic advanced to the second round in Draw B, but Block fell in three to Vanderbilt’s Sraberg, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. With the loss, Block will compete in the consolation second round of Draw B.
