BATON ROUGE – LSU and UL-Lafayette combined to share in the first selection of state college softball players announced on Wednesday for play through Feb. 26.
The players of the month are hitter Bailey Landry of LSU and pitchers Alyssa Denham for the Ragin’ Cajuns and Sydney Smith for the Tigers.
The regular player of the week voting will begin after this Sunday’s play.
Landry in February hit .551 with a team leading 27 hits and 13 RBI. Denham, a freshman, and Smith, a sophomore, both posted 4-1 records with Denham recording 15 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA, while Smith had 13 strikeouts and a 0.93 ERA.

Bailey Landry led LSU at the plate for the month of February as she hit .551 with a team leading 27 hits, including a pair of doubles, three triples and a home run. Landry slugged .776 for the month with a .574 on-base percentage in helping lead LSU to a 12-3 record in February. Was named the SEC, NFCA and espnW national player of the week as over the course of five games hit .813 with a 1.375 slugging percentage and 10 RBIs in wins over Louisiana Tech, Georgia Southern and Central Arkansas.

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns freshman pitcher Alyssa Denham completed her first month as a collegian with a 4-1 record and 1.29 ERA highlighted by a complete game, two-hit shutout of No. 4 Alabama that secured the series win for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Denham worked 38 innings in the circle over the season’s first three weekends, limiting foes to 10 runs (seven earned), 21 hits and a .159 average. In all three weekends of the month, Denham yielded fewer hits than innings pitched.

Sophomore Sydney Smith led the LSU pitching staff in the month of February with a 0.93 ERA, allowing just four runs and 14 total hits in 22.2 innings of work in the circle. Smith has not given up more than two runs in any appearance, including a two-hit shutout of New Mexico State and a three-hit, one-run, six strikeout performance against Georgia Southern. Also has wins over Oklahoma State and McNeese State.
