Notes on the Tigers
LSU swept its three games last weekend, posting two wins over Army and one victory over Air Force … the win over Army in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader marked the 2,500th victory in LSU Baseball history; the Tigers played their first baseball game in 1893 … senior left-hander Jared Poche’ was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and the SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday … Poche’ fired the sixth individual no-hitter in LSU history, as he recorded a seven-inning gem against Army in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday … Poche’ worked seven hitless frames, recording no walks and four strikeouts over 79 pitches in LSU’s 6-0 win … Army’s only base runner in the contest reached on an error in the LSU outfield in the fourth inning … Poche’s no-hitter was the first by an LSU pitcher since 1979, when Bobby Landry accomplished the feat in a seven-inning game against Southern Mississippi … Poche’ improved his LSU career record to 28-9 … senior second baseman Cole Freeman hit .600 (6-for-10) last weekend in the Tigers’ wins over Army and Air Force with two doubles, four runs, three RBI, two stolen bases and a .636 on-base percentage … he also recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 11 chances … Freeman , who was LSU’s leading hitter last season and the leading hitter in the Cape Cod League last summer, ignited a three-run outburst in the first inning of the season opener against Army, as he led off the game with a single, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a groundout … freshman third baseman Josh Smith recorded a team-high six RBI in the Tigers’ three wins over Army and Air Force … Smith hit .429 (3-for-7) with one homer, six RBI, two runs, one steal and a .500 on-base percentage … his three-run homer in the fourth inning of Sunday’s game versus Air Force proved to be the game-winning hit, breaking a 2-2 tie and propelling LSU to a 10-3 win … Smith was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI in LSU’s win over Army in the second game of Saturday’s twin bill … junior right-hander Alex Lange improved his LSU career record to 21-4 with a win over Army in Game 1 on Saturday … Lange limited the Black Knights to no runs on four hits in five innings with no walks and six strikeouts … freshman right-hander Eric Walker earned a win over Air Force in his collegiate debut, limiting the Falcons to one earned run on two hits in five innings with one walk and six strikeouts … as a staff, the LSU pitchers allowed just two earned runs on nine hits in 23 innings with four walks and 23 strikeouts … LSU batted .329 (28-for-85) as a team over the weekend with six doubles, one triple, four homers and 25 runs … senior shortstop Kramer Robertson batted .556 (5-for-9) with one double, one triple, four RBI and four runs, and junior rightfielder Greg Deichmann hit .444 (4-for-9) with one double, two homers, five RBI and three runs.
