LAFAYETTE, La.— In their first matches as a pair, seniors Jordan Daigle and Justin Bustch took back-to-back straight set victories Friday to advance into the doubles semifinal at the Culotta Tennis Complex.
The 28th-ranked duo will continue play at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday against Southern California’s Jack Jaede and Thibault Forget.
In their first match of the day, the No. 1 seeded Daigle and Butsch defeated Louisiana-Lafayette’s Michael Kritzinger and Ole Miss’ Tim Sandkaulen, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals where the pair swept Texas Tech’s Carlos Di Laura and Connor Curry, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Rafael Wagner secured his second collegiate victory in the singles consolation round of 16 where he pieced together a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Texas Tech’s Carlos Di Laura to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round at 12 p.m. CT where he will face Texas Tech’s Connor Curry.
“I really liked the way the guys came out today and made some adjustments from yesterday that we discussed,” head coach Jeff Brown said. “Justin and Jordan seem to be working well together as a team in doubles, and the young guys continue to improve.”
Wagner and fellow freshman Julian Saborio partnered for the first doubles match of their collegiate careers where they fell to Texas Tech’s 29th-ranked duo Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson, 6-3, 7-6.
Saborio dropped his match, 6-1, 6-3, to Ole Miss’ Sandkaulen in the singles consolation round of 16.
