BATON ROUGE, La.- The LSU women’s swimming team officially kicks off the 2016-17 season at 2 p.m. CT Friday against Vanderbilt at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.
“On the women’s side to jump into SEC competition right away, it’s exciting,” said LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer. “This is a really early competition for us in terms of dual meets. We’re going to have to get up there and see how things pan out. We have a lot of people swimming their main events, and if we’re moving forward in our dual meet structure, this should give me a lot of feedback of where we’re at training wise for our progression through the season.”
Seniors Kara Kopcso and Leah Troskot return to help anchor the women’s swim team that includes 14 letterwinners and six true freshmen.
Kopcso, a native of Mandeville, Louisiana, broke three school records last season, and she was a part of two school record relay teams while also qualifying for NCAA Championships individually for a third season.
Troskot, a native of Alberta, Canada, qualified for her second-straight NCAA Championships automatically in 2016 and earned NCAA Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 100 free, becoming the program’s fifth All-American in the event.
The team will return to Baton Rouge for the annual Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet on Saturday. The meet begins at 11 a.m. inside the LSU Natatorium and admission is free.
The women finished last season with a 12-1 record during the 2015-16 campaign, including a 2-1 mark in SEC competition and a No. 20 ranking nationally.
