Foster Wins Two on Day 2 of Classic

CARY, N.C. — Ryann Foster earned two hard-fought victories on Day 2 of the James Bonk Classic Saturday, defeating Alyssa Smith of Duke in singles competition after combining with Abby Owens to take down Furman’s Ansley Speaks and Katarina Weymouth Saturday morning.

After splitting doubles results Friday, freshman Becca Weissmann and senior Skylar Holloway played in the third-place match against Alejandra Cisneros and Anna Rogers of NC State but ultimately fell in an intensely-played contest.

“They all did an incredible job today with their intensity and working on aspects of their game,” said co-head coach Julia Sell. “For the first tournament of the year, that is exactly what we want them to do.”

After a stellar debut Friday, Weissmann dropped her singles match against 37th-ranked Kourtney Keegan of Florida 6-4, 6-4. Owens and Holloway also fell in singles play to North Carolina’s Makenna Jones and Furman’s Katarina Weymouth, respectively.

The Lady Tigers now set their sights on the third and final day of the invite Sunday where they will each play in their final singles matches of the invite.

Owens will face Cassie Mercer of Virginia, Holloway will face Caroline Wegner of TCU and Foster will face Meghan Kelley of Virginia. Weissmann will take on Virginia’s Camille Favero in her group’s third-place singles match.
