The Tigers (5-4, 1-1 SEC) are flying in the wake of Friday’s 3-0 shutout of Ole Miss as they picked up their fourth win in their last five outings. Junior All-SEC striker Jorian Baucom scored her club-best fifth and sixth goals of the season with two penalties on either side of halftime, while junior midfielder Zoe Higgins put the match out of reach with her first career goal in the 77th minute of play.
LSU steps back into non-conference play Sunday with its inaugural meeting against Lamar as the two sides square off on the soccer pitch for the first time. The Tigers have faced Southland Conference opposition on 34 previous occasions while totaling a 28-4-2 mark all-time. That includes a current four-match unbeaten run dating back to the 2014 regular season.
Leading the Cardinals is first-year head coach Steve Holeman, who is no stranger to facing LSU with previous stints in the Southeastern Conference as the manager of both Ole Miss and Georgia. The Tigers look to even their record against Holeman-coached teams as they enter Sunday’s match at 8-9-4 in 21 previous meetings, including a 7-6-3 mark against Ole Miss from 1995-2009 and a 1-3-1 mark against Georgia from 2010-14.
Lamar (1-6-1, 0-0-1 SLC) is led in the attack by junior midfielder M.J. Eckart as she has scored four of the team’s five goals in eight matches this season. The Cardinals have also conceded 18 goals to their opponents.
After wrapping up their home weekend against Lamar on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers will head back on the road next week with a trip to Columbia to face 10th-ranked South Carolina on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT before a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, to battle Vanderbilt on Sunday, Sept. 25, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
