BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Tigers stage their SEC Network Takeover (#SECNTakeover) beginning late Wednesday and continuing for 24 hours through Thursday night.
LSU has selected 12 events in six different sports from the archives to relive with fans on the national TV network for 24 consecutive hours. (Note: takeover schedules were created from television inventory available to ESPN and the SEC Network.)
The SEC Network Takeover is a two-week programming initiative dedicated to airing programming selected by Southeastern Conference schools. All 14 schools are crafting their own 24-hour schedule which may include classic games, films, ESPN original content and some school-produced content.
The 24 hours of LSU coverage begins at 11 p.m. CT Wednesday with the football team’s resounding victory over Oregon in the 2011 Cowboys Classic at Arlington, Texas, a win that began the Tigers’ march to their first undefeated regular season since 1958.
The Lady Tigers basketball team is featured at 1 a.m. on Thursday morning, when top-ranked LSU’s 68-58 win over No. 5 Tennessee in February 2005 is replayed. The game was played in the Maravich Center before 15,233 fans, the largest home crowd in program history.
The 1990 LSU-Loyola Marymount game, one of the most electrifying contests in men’s college basketball history, will air at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The 148-141 LSU overtime victory was an epic battle featuring the Tigers’ Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Jackson versus LMU’s Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble. The game will be presented in the SEC Rewind format, featuring interviews with coaches and players.
The top-ranked LSU softball team’s 1-0 win over No. 6 Oklahoma in March 2015 will be shown at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. The Tigers, who went on to advance to the 2015 Women’s College World Series, were sparked by the pitching of Carley Hoover and the bat of Bianka Bell.
Gymnastics takes the stage at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, when the fourth-ranked Tigers’ dominating win over No. 3 Alabama in March 2016 is on the network. LSU tallied a season-high score to beat the Crimson Tide in front of a record crowd of 13,296 in a sold-out Maravich Center.
Men’s basketball is featured again at 8 a.m. Thursday, when fans can watch the Tigers’ January 2015 win over Georgia, a thrilling double-overtime showdown.
Back-to-back football games will air beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Tigers’ 35-17 win over Texas A&M in September 1986, a contest that marked the debut of freshman quarterback Tommy Hodson. LSU’s unforgettable Tiger Stadium triumph over Florida in October 1997 follows at noon on Thursday in a game that marked the Tigers’ first win over a top-ranked opponent.
The appearance of the “Rally Possum” is recounted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the replay of the LSU baseball team’s remarkable win over Arkansas in May 2016, when the Tigers recovered from a 9-1 deficit to post a crucial SEC victory.
Running back Leonard Fournette‘s brilliant performance is highlighted at 4 p.m. Thursday, when the Tigers’ 45-21 win over Auburn in September 2015 airs on the network. One of the greatest moments in LSU football history follows at 6 p.m. Thursday, as coach Les Miles leads the Tigers over Ohio State to claim the 2007 BCS National Championship.
LSU’s SEC Network Takeover concludes at 8 p.m. Thursday with the airing of the 1996 College World Series championship game, a contest that produced the greatest finish in college baseball annals. Second baseman Warren Morris propelled LSU to a 9-8 win over Miami (Fla.) with a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.
