Golovin Falls in Round of 32 at NCAA Tennis

TULSA, Okla. – LSU women’s tennis freshman Jessica Golovin‘s season ended in the second round of the NCAA Division I Singles Championships at the hands of eighth-ranked Sinead Lohan of Miami 6-2, 6-4 Thursday afternoon at the Case Tennis Center.

“Jessica gave a Tiger-like effort even with being hindered physically,” co-head coach Michael Sell said. “She has come up huge in some big matches for us this year, and her competitive energy is infections. She is eager to improve in many areas this summer to be ready for a strong sophomore year.”

Golovin became the fourth player in school history to advance to the second round of the individual championships and the second freshman in second history. It concludes a terrific first year in Baton Rouge for Golovin who was named to the All-SEC freshman team and finished the season with a record of 22-8 overall.

The loss in the individual championships marks the final match for LSU during the 2015-16 season. The Lady Tigers finished 18th in the ITA/Oracle rankings, which tied for the best final ranking in school history.

LSU finished the season with a 19-12 record overall. The team, under co-head coaches Julia Sell and Michael Sell, reached the ITA Team Indoor Championships for the first time in school history and also reached a program-best ranking three separate times.

The program returns five players with experience to the lineup. Joana Vale Costs and Golovin were named to the all-conference teams and both competed at the singles championships. Junior Abby Owens became the 16th player in school history to reach the 30-win mark and Ryann Foster provided a strong spot in the lineup with a 25-14 overall record.
