Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 14 this week in the USA Today coaches poll after posting a 2-2 mark in its four games last week … the LSU pitching staff limited Texas A&M – the SEC’s No. 1 hitting team – to a .275 (25-for-91) average in last weekend’s series in College Station … sophomore right-hander Alex Lange helped lead the Tigers to a win over the Aggies in Game 2, pitching 6.1 innings and limiting Texas A&M to two runs on five hits with six walks and 11 strikeouts … freshman right-hander Caleb Gilbert earned the Game 2 win in relief, blanking Texas A&M over the final 1.1 innings with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts … Gilbert fanned Texas A&M rightfielder Nick Banks for the final out in the bottom of the ninth with runners on the corners to secure the 3-2 LSU win … Gilbert improved to 3-1 this season, and he has a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings (nine relief appearances), recording five walks and 23 strikeouts … junior right-hander Hunter Newman delivered excellent relief performances in Games 2 and 3, working a combined 2.1 shutout innings with one hit, no walks and one strikeout … senior left-hander John Valek III delivered a quality start in Game 3, allowing just two runs on six hits in six innings with one walk and one strikeout … sophomore Greg Deichmann led LSU at the plate in four games last week, batting .357 (5-for-14) with one homer, two RBI and three runs … Deichmann hit .400 (4-for-10) in the Texas A&M series with one homer, one RBI and two runs … his homer in Game 3 of the Texas A&M series was his third of the season and his first career dinger in an SEC game … freshman rightfielder Antoine Duplantis‘ 19-game hitting streak ended last Tuesday in LSU’s win over Louisiana-Lafayette at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. … Duplantis’ streak was the third-longest by an LSU freshman over the past 20 seasons – he hit .397 during the streak with six doubles, two triples, 10 RBI, 14 runs and seven steals in seven attempts … Duplantis is hitting a team-high .356 (32-for-90) on the year with six doubles, two triples, 11 RBI, 14 runs and seven stolen bases … junior second baseman Cole Freeman batted .333 (4-for-12) in the Tigers’ four games last week with one double, two RBI, three runs and four steals in five attempts … junior centerfielder Jake Fraley batted .313 (5-for-16) last week with two doubles, one triple, two RBI, two runs and one stolen base.
