Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 10 this week in the D1 Baseball and Perfect Game polls after posting a 2-2 mark in its four games last week … freshman rightfielder Antoine Duplantis extended his hitting streak to 19 games, marking the third-longest streak by an LSU freshman over the past 20 seasons … outfielder Blake Dean posted a 20-game streak in 2007, and shortstop Alex Bregman compiled a 23-game streak in 2013 … Duplantis, who has at least one hit in each of the Tigers’ 19 games this season, is batting .397 during with six doubles, two triples, 10 RBI, 14 runs and seven steals in seven attempts … Duplantis batted .438 (7-for-16) in the Tiger’s four games last week with one double, one triple, three RBI, three runs and three stolen bases … leftfielder Beau Jordan enjoyed a productive weekend at the plate against Alabama, batting .429 (6-for-14) in three games with two RBI … Jordan produced an RBI single during LSU’s six-run eighth inning on Sunday that erased a 4-1 deficit and led to a 7-5 LSU victory over the Crimson Tide … sophomore first baseman/DH Greg Deichmann hit .375 (3-for-8) in the Alabama series with two doubles and one run scored … Deichmann provided a single as the second batter in the eighth inning on Sunday to help trigger LSU’s six-run rally … sophomore first baseman Bryce Jordan batted .364 (4-for-11) in the Alabama series with one double and two runs, and junior shortstop Kramer Robertson hit .333 (4-for-12) against the Crimson Tide with one double and two RBI … Robertson’s two-run single in the eighth inning against Alabama on Sunday gave a LSU a 5-4 lead and proved to be the game-winning hit … another key hit in the rally was provided by freshman pinch hitter Brody Wofford, who delivered a bases-loaded single to cut Alabama’s lead to 4-3 … senior left-hander John Valek III delivered a quality start on Sunday, working six innings and limiting Alabama to two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts … Valek, who was not involved in the decision of LSU’s Sunday comeback victory, is 4-0 this season with a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings; he has recorded 26 strikeouts and only two walks while limiting opponents to a .239 batting average … freshman right-hander Caleb Gilbert earned a relief win on Sunday versus Alabama in his SEC career debut … Gilbert fired 46 pitches over 2.1 innings, limiting the Crimson Tide to one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts … Gilbert is 2-1 on the year with a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings (eight appearances), and he has recorded four walks and 20 strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .217 batting average.
