BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU senior left-hander John Valek III was named Friday the Pitcher of the Month for February by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.
He was 2-0 in February with a 2.13 ERA, and he recorded no walks and 13 strikeouts in 12.2 innings while limiting opponents to a .174 batting average.
Valek, a native of Parkland, Fla., turned in a brilliant outing last Sunday against Sacramento State, limiting the Hornets to one run on four hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
Valek defeated Cincinnati on February 21, holding the Bearcats to two earned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.
He is LSU’s scheduled starting pitcher on Saturday at 2 p.m., when the Tigers meet Fordham in the first game of a doubleheader.
