BATON ROUGE – Ed Rubin, a key member of two of LSU men’s tennis teams that advanced to the NCAA semifinals, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Lafayette on Feb. 27 at the age of 38.
Rubin, a native of Lafayette, graduated from LSU with a degree in biology in 2002. He later went on to earn his Juris Doctorate in Law from Southern University in 2006. Rubin was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll from 1998-2000 and was named a National Merritt Scholarship winner.
As a member of the Tiger tennis team, Rubin helped LSU to a pair of Southeastern Conference titles in 1998 and 1999 as well as helping the squad to the 1999 SEC Tournament title with a 4-3 win over Georgia.
Rubin, the brother of former professional tennis star Chanda Rubin, was also a member of LSU’s Final Four teams in 1999 and 2000.
Rubin finished his LSU career with a 41-43 singles mark and 36-21 in overall in doubles. He was ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation in doubles as a senior. He played his first two years at LSU under coach Jerry Simmons and his final two seasons with the Tigers came under current head coach Jeff Brown.
“We are extremely saddened by this loss,” coach Brown said. “Ed was great teammate and a wonderful friend to us all. Words cannot express what Ed meant to the LSU tennis program and the impact that he had on those around him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ed’s parents and the rest of his family.”
After graduation from Southern Law School, Rubin became a law clerk for Judge Porter in his hometown and after passing the Louisiana State Bar, he began his private law practice taking over his father’s law office in Lafayette in 2010. He became a member of the National Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Martinet Society (a group of professional lawyers.)
Rubin, who was born on Feb. 2, 1978, in Lafayette as the youngest of three children, is survived by his parents Judge Edward and Bernadette Rubin of Carencro, La., his sisters La’Shon Rubin-Wilson (DeShun) of Arnaudville, La., and Chanda Rubin-Hollier (Mireyou) of Lafayette.
Funeral services for Rubin will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Kinchen Funeral Home in Lafayette from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30. Interment at Calvary Cemetery will follow funeral services at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
