Cavin Leads Women’s Golf in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – LSU sophomore women’s golfer Sydney Cavin of Baton Rouge posted a 3-under 69 in the opening round Sunday of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.

Cavin stands in a tie for second in the individual competition after the first day of the three-day competition in LSU’s opening event of the spring season.

Cavin, who had five birdies in the round, is tied with Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford, Emily Penttila of Tulane, Chih-Min Chen of Oklahoma State and Maria Torres of Florida. Lauren Kim of Stanford is the individual leader at 4-under 68.

The Lady Tigers in their opening round of the spring posted a 10-over par 298 and stands in a tie for 10th place with UCLA. Arizona and Oklahoma State are tied for first at 1-under 287 with Florida and host school Tulane are at even par 288 in a tie for third with Miami in fifth at 3-over 291.

For LSU, senior Nadine Dreher and freshman Kathleen Gallagher posted rounds of 4-over par 76, while senior Elise Bradley is at 5-over 77 for the final counting score in the play-5, count-4 scoring system. Carly Goldstein posted an 81.

It was announced Sunday evening that the second round would now by an 8 a.m. shotgun start in an attempt to get the second round end with forecast of rain both Monday and Tuesday in the New Orleans area.
