BATON ROUGE, La. — The 13th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team, off of a 5-2 comeback win over NC State, returns to action Sunday against No. 75 Maryland and South Alabama at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The Lady Tigers improved to 7-2 with the win over the Wolfpack. Despite dropping the doubles point and the first set on four of six singles courts, LSU roared back to win five singles courts.
“We’ve got to come out much more aggressive on Sunday,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “We have to come out with more focus in our matches against Maryland and South Alabama.”
No. 25 Joana Vale Costa leads the way for LSU on court one with a 5-2 record. The junior defeated Martina Frantova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 Friday to clinch the match for the Lady Tigers.
Sophomore Ryann Fosters is undefeated for LSU this season. All seven of Foster’s wins have come in two sets. Foster defeated NC State’s Tayla Stenta 6-3, 6-4 to even the match at 2-2 Friday.
Jessica Golovin found her groove in the match on Friday. After dropping all three matches at the ITA Team Indoor Championships and the first set against NC State, Golovin fought back to defeat Bianca Moldovan 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court four.
Abby Owens used a strong showing against the Wolfpack to improve to 6-1 on the season. After dropping the first set 3-6, Owens used a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second set to regain the momentum. The junior routed Amanda Rebol, 6-0, in the third set to earn the win.
Ella Taylor earned the first point on Friday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Claudia Wiktorin. Taylor improved to 6-2 for the season and 7-2 in her last nine matches. Taylor is just one win away from the 75th of her career.
This is the first ever match against Maryland and the sixth against South Alabama. LSU holds a 4-1 record against USA with the last meeting coming in 1990.
